Consequently, the answer from silpol is currently not correct because you will not be able to retrieve your DMs this way for the moment. Sadly, the DMs are not part of your archive (because I guess it would require to contain tweets from other people of your conversations to make sense). However, they have never been deleted and it is now possible to read any of the messages posted in a conversation using Direct Messages. When Twitter released the Direct Messages feature, it was not possible to get back old messages due to technical choices and limitations.
